How to prepare for the IELTS test

To make sure that you receive your ideal score, you will need to prepare for the test, no matter how good your English may be.

Make sure you understand the IELTS test format and what will happen on test day. Once you are familiar with the test format, you will know what to expect in each section making it easier for you and minimizing time loss and stress during the test.

  1. Read some additional material on IELTS and get familiar with the test format
    You can find lots of useful tips and valuable resources on www.takeielts.org such as How to prepare for the IELTS test. This will help you understand the IELTS test format. We also recommend that you read the test day advice and assessment criteria.

  2. If you register to take an IELTS test, you will get free access to online practice materials - IELTS Ready: Premium– provided by the British Council. The course includes listening, reading and writing exercises, and mock tests designed to develop your exam skills. As you complete the practice tests, the platform adapts and personalises a study plan to help you achieve your desired score.
  3. Online preparation courses and books

It offers you training in developing strategies and techniques specifically relevant to the IELTS test and English language practice at an advance level, which will increase your skills and confidence.

  4. Practice your English
    Read, speak and listen to English as much as you can. Practice speaking English with your friends. Use radio, television and the web to hear and read different English texts.

    IELTS Apps for phone and tablet: There are a number of IELTS apps for iPhone or Android, such as IELTS Word Power and IELTS Prep, allowing you to practice - even while on the go.
    We recommend using materials from a reliable source and/or developed by one of the test partners, i.e. British Council, Cambridge Assessment English or IDP:IELTS Australia.
