Understanding EU
Understanding EU is a project that aims to make the European Union’s legal framework more accessible and meaningful for citizens.
Understanding EU seeks to make the European Union’s legal framework clearer, more relevant, and easier to engage with. The project rethinks the role of EU legislation through dialogue with citizens, improves knowledge about how laws work, and provides easy-to-read materials on the basic principles of the Union. It also shows how legislation connects to daily life and core European values, encouraging citizens to participate in democracy while strengthening resilience against disinformation and political manipulation.
How We Work
The project is built on a participatory and co-creative approach, engaging people of all ages and backgrounds. Citizens are invited to take part in dialogues about the future of inclusive legislation, while policymakers are encouraged to explore the importance of easy language in official communication. At the same time, new digital tools such as Knowledge Bits, a Digital Lexicon, and an online video crash course are being developed to present EU principles in simple, engaging formats. Interactive online events – including feedback seminars and “Knowledge Parties” – bring people together in a virtual journey through Europe.
Results and Impact
By combining dialogue, awareness-raising, and accessible resources, Understanding EU will deliver a Key Findings Report summarising citizens’ needs and wishes, as well as a Policy Recommendation Paper for decision-makers. The project will also produce 27 Knowledge Bits, a Digital Lexicon, and a video course that explain EU law in easy language. These outcomes will improve citizens’ understanding of EU legislation, inspire greater engagement in democratic life, and increase awareness of how accessible communication can make Europe’s institutions more inclusive.
