Folkuniversitetet is offering courses in Swedish for students, postdocs and staff members at Karolinska Institutet.

Course eligibility

The courses in Swedish are available to the following categories:

  • Exchange students, Bachelor’s or Master’s students enrolled at Karolinska Institutet – one course free of charge for participants (admission decision or Ladok transcript required)
  • PhD students enrolled at Karolinska Institutet – one course free of charge for participants
    (admission decision or Ladok transcript needed)
  • Postdocs at KaroIinska Institutet – one course free of charge for participants
  • Staff members – paid for by respective KI departments (please provide the ZZ code)
  • Other participants from Karolinska Institutet are charged a course fee of 1,861 SEK including VAT. 
    Students and postdocs interested in courses in addition to the complimentary course are welcome to join but the course fee has to be paid by the individual (only one course free of charge for participants).

If you intend to take up the offer of one course free of charge, please provide the name of the person at KI responsible for paying the course fee.

Please note that the free course offer does not apply to:

  • Visiting PhD students*
  • Exchange students that will be enrolled at KI for less than 8 weeks*
  • If your native language is Norwegian or Danish*

* If one of the above is applicable to you and you would like to study Swedish in a group with other students/staff members from KI, you will have to pay for the course yourself.

Levels

Swedish A1 part 1-3 (60 lessons in total. One lesson is 45 minutes)
Level objectives:  You should master the basics of the Swedish language so that you can make yourself understood and understand others in everyday situations, for example when greeting someone, ordering something, and providing or asking for simple information. The knowledge you had at the start of the course should also be consolidated and reinforced.

  • Swedish A1 part 1/3 (20 lessons)
    The beginner’s course in Swedish is for people with no or very limited prior knowledge of Swedish.
  • Swedish A1 part 2/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A1 Part 1/3 or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 20 hours of studies).
  • Swedish A1 part 3/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A1 Parts 1/3 and 2/3 or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 40 hours of studies).

Swedish A2 part 1-3 (60 lessons in total. One lesson is 45 minutes)
Level objectives
You should develop the basics of the Swedish language, be able to make yourself understood, and be able to understand others in various everyday situations, for example when talking about work, education and home life in the past, present, and future. 

  • Swedish A2 part 1/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A1 part 1-3 or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 60 hours of studies).
  • Swedish A2, part 2/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A2 part 1 (of 3) or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 80 hours of studies).
  • Swedish A2, part 3/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A2 part 2 (of 3) or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 100 hours of studies).

Swedish B1 part 1-3 (60 lessons in total. One lesson is 45 minutes)
Level objectives: You should be able to understand and take part in everyday conversations, including over the phone. You should be able to express your opinion in simple discussions. You should learn how to write different types of text, both personal and very simple formal ones. The knowledge that you had at the start of the course should also be consolidated and advanced.

  • Swedish B1 part 1/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish A2 part 1-3 or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 120 hours of studies).
  • Swedish B1, part 2/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish B1 part 1 (of 3) or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 140 hours of studies)
  • Swedish B1, part 3/3 (20 lessons)
    This is a course in Swedish for people who have previously studied Swedish B1 part 2 (of 3) or who have equivalent prior knowledge (approx. 160 hours of studies)

Svenska B1+ del 1-3 (Totalt 60 lektioner. En lektion är 45 minuter)
Nivåmål: Målet är att du, efter B1+ del 1, 2 och 3, ska kunna delta i samtal och diskussioner om det vardagliga livet, aktuella händelser och dina intressen. Med hjälp av enkla, språkliga medel ska du kunna få fram det mesta du vill säga, både muntligt och skriftligt.

  • Svenska B1+ del 1 av 3 (20 lektioner)
    Det här är en kurs i svenska för dig som tidigare studerat svenska B1, del 1, 2 och 3 eller har motsvarande förkunskaper (ca 180 timmar svenskastudier).

Svenska B2- (minus) del 1-3 (Totalt 60 lektioner. En lektion är 45 minuter)

Nivåmål: Att du, efter B2- del 1, 2 och 3, någorlunda korrekt ska kunna formulera dig på mer än ett sätt, både muntligt och skriftligt. Du ska kunna förstå det mesta i talat standardspråk och det mesta i allmänna texter, tidningsartiklar och lättare skönlitteratur.

  • Svenska B2-(minus) del 3 av 3 (20 lektioner)
    Det här är en kurs i svenska för dig som tidigare studerat svenska B2-(minus) del 2 (av 3) eller har motsvarande förkunskaper (ca 280 timmar svenskastudier).

B-levels: Rivstart B1+B2, Textbok (2nd Edition)

The book is included and can be loaned from Folkuniversitetet.
You need to register at www.nok.se to access the digital exercises before the first lesson. Registration is free of charge.

Getting started with extramaterial

Course format

One evening a week for ten weeks.

Course location

Folkuniversitetet Holländargatan 38, T-bana Rådmansgatan or Odenplan.

Due to the prevailing Coronavirus situation, lessons may be conducted remotely on Zoom. If this is the case, you will receive all the information needed by email before the course starts or during the course.

Important information

  • Who is eligible for the courses?
    Please ensure that you read the information at the top of the page regarding who is eligible to take these Swedish courses at Folkuniversitetet.
  • Study allowance from Karolinska Institutet
    Please contact the administrator at your KI department about your upcoming course in Swedish. Ensure that you have been given permission to study at Folkuniversitetet and that your department will pay for the course.
    You need to fill in the name of the individual responsible for paying the course fee (if you do not intend to pay for the course yourself). Staff members need to fill in the ZZ-code.
  • Cancellation
    If you need to cancel a course that you have registered for, you must do it before the course starts.
    An invoice is sent to Karolinska Institutet or you personally even if you attend only once. If you cannot attend your course for a short period due to work or illness, contact your teacher to see what you can do to catch up with the progress of the rest of the group.
  • Reserve list
    If your chosen course is already full, we can put you on the reserve list. If a place becomes available, you will be notified and offered the place.
  • First lesson
    If you have enrolled on a course but cannot attend the first lesson and fail to inform us of your absence, your place on the course will be forfeited to a student on the reserve list.
