Course content
- Spanish courts in the 17th and 18th century and their central artists such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya and El Greco.
- 19th century’s art. Joaquín Sorolla
- 20th century Spain before and after the civil war
- the formation of the surrealist groups in the 1920s. Spanish Avant-Garde
- Spain after Francisco Franco: Movida Madrileña
This course chronologically walks through Spanish art history from the 17th century until today. You will learn about the Spanish court and its artists in the 17th and 16th centuries, the Spanish painting in the 19th century, as well as the birth of Avant-Gardist art and the surrealist groups in the 20th century.
Also the course will focus on the effects of the Franquist Spain in arts and the time after Francisco Franco and the Movida Madrileña, a cultural movement that took part during the 1970s and 1980s.
Spanish cultural movements reflected the general European history of the time and affected other countries’ art. This course teaches you more about the typical Spanish artistic trends, their history, and their relationship to the general European history of the time.
Course setup
This course is online via Zoom. You participate at the date and time indicated in the list to the right. Some days before the course starts you will recieve an email with further instructions.
Who is the course for?
It is recommended that you have some previous basic knowledge about art history. If you are a beginner, we recommend the Art History Basic course (held in Swedish). Also, as this course is held in English, it is required that you can discuss and understand English.

Jag är en finsk internationell polyglott och konstälskare som är född och uppvuxen i Finland, men sedan dess har jag bott i tre olika länder: Finland, Spanien och nu Sverige. Jag har studerat konstvetenskap och litteratur på Universidad Complutense de Madrid och Stockholms universitet, där jag specialiserade mig i nutidskonst och konstkritik.
Jag har alltid varit intresserad av olika språk, när jag inte undervisar i kurser på Folkuniversitetet arbetar jag som översättare och konstkritiker på finska, spanska och engelska. Hur som helst är jag sugen på att ta min karriär till olika länder och därför har jag arbetat inom konst i Venedig, Madrid och Helsingfors.
På Folkuniversitetet undervisar jag konstvetenskap och finska. I mina kurser är öppna samtal och tal lärandets hjärta. Jag vill motivera alla att använda sin kunskap både i konsten och språket från kursens början.
