What is the difference between writing for ourselves and writing for competitive markets? What do we have to say that nobody else is saying? How can we best say it in order to reach and affect editors and finally readers? This course works with specific issues related to writing for publication, including making manuscript proposals and summaries, working with editors, revising work according to editorial wishes, cooperative processes, and formal issues. We meet four times during the spring, though participants may wish to meet privately between course meetings. A final combined product is the aim of the course.
Note: pre-requisites for this course are Creative Writing – Intro course, and Creative Writing II. If you have not taken these courses, a text sample and a phone interview are required.
1. Developing proposals and summaries that solve structural problems ahead of time.2. Genre and form – adapting for publishers and readers. 3. Editing: expanding, contracting, stylistic issues, language issues, subject matter, etc. 4. Collaborative writing: planning, unity of ideas and style, transitions, details, etc.
The course meets every third Thursday (to allow for extra writing time), 6-9:15 p.m. February 29 to May 2 2024.
