How do we go from performing a step to conveying meaning with our steps? How do you tap into your intuition and provocation to align your physicality with intentionality? Sometimes a step is just a step, but when you are able to source your natural groove the body begins to talk. Through the use of musicality, improvisation, dissecting the manipulation of rhythm, and learning to tune into yourself as well as your surroundings this workshop will guide you through masterful ways to get in touch with being alive within your movement and accessing your creative impulses. Together we will find joy in our groove and learn to detach ourselves from our inner critics so we can begin to move more honestly. This workshop will pull from the inhibitions expressed on dance floors at night clubs, physical theater exercises, and dynamic combinations to experience a nuanced relationship to your creative instincts and all the ways you can choose to express yourself. We will ask what does it mean to be present in our movement and how can we heighten our senses to access parts of our bodies we’ve yet to explore. It’s not about moving perfectly, but instead moving honestly.

Jesse Kovarsky is a dancer and movement director from NYC that has performed and taught all over the world. He received his Masters in Performance from Trinity Laban in London and went to work with visionary movement makers such as Hofesh Shechter, Sidi Larbi Cherkoui, Punch Drunk, Alexander Ekman, Ryan Heffington, Russell Maliphant, Bobbi Jene Smith, Arthur Pita, Sonya Tayeh, and Celia Rolson-Hall. He gravitates towards more theatrical work having originated roles in Punch Drunk’s ‘The Drowned Man’ and performed in their hit show ‘Sleep No More’. He has appeared on Broadway in ‘Fiddler on The Roof’ and ‘The Bands Visit’ and has danced in various Films/TV including ‘Anna Karenina’, ‘The Muppets Most Wanted’, ‘TickTick Boom’, ‘After Yang’, and ‘Harlem’. He has collaborated with notable brands such as Netflix, Amazon, Hermes, Virgin, Calvin Klein, Saks Fifth Avenue, & Nike. Throughout his career as a dancer he slowly established his own personal approach to movement that stems from improvisation, theater exercises, and spending hours dancing at the night club. Greatly impacted by music, his approach to discovering how the body wants to move is heavily assisted by finding our own personal uninhibited groove.
