Retoucher – Image Designer
The Higher Vocational Education program Retoucher – Image Designer at Fotoskolan STHLM has an international focus and provides you with professional competence in image editing, retouching, color grading (color correction for moving images), and image creation for photographic and moving images. The program is free of charge, lasts for 2.5 years, and qualifies for student financial aid. The education is entirely focused on working with photographic and moving images. The Higher Vocational Education program Retoucher – Image Designer does not train professional photographers.
Program Overview
In the vocational training program Retoucher – Image Designer, you will learn to handle image editing software, explore the future of visual media, and understand its historical development and preservation using both new and classic techniques. The program is perfect for those interested in images and film and who enjoy problem-solving, and are able to master advanced digital tools.
Language of Instruction
Our language of instruction is Swedish, and some teaching is conducted in English. You must have sufficient knowledge of Swedish to be able to benefit from the education.
Visual Communication
You will deepen your understanding of visual communication and learn to work through a design process from concept to finished result, with a focus on final delivery. Fotoskolan STHLM offers the only post-secondary level education in Europe that exclusively focuses on post-production of photographic and moving images.
Classical Retouching and Future Image Design
The education begins with classical retouching, a profession as old as photography itself, and then expands to future image design. With the help of digital tools, you will enhance images and realize clients’ ideas, while gaining advanced knowledge of Photoshop.
Classroom Instruction
During the first two years, you will be taught in a classroom with controlled lighting and technology adapted to industry standards. Your workstation includes a Mac Studio, a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor, and a professional Wacom drawing tablet.
Advanced Software Training
After acquiring broad knowledge of photographic images during the first year, you will learn to manage software for AI, animation, editing, and color correction of moving images.
Internship and Final Project
In the second year, you will complete a six-month internship at a company that matches your focus. Before graduation, you will present your experiences from the internship and complete a degree project.
Course Structure
The courses are tailored to the skills required to become a skilled retoucher and image designer, with a focus on post-production and image creation. You will also learn about the profession through courses in entrepreneurship, color management, color and form, image communication, and photographic production.
