Prerequisites

No prior knowledge is required.

Objectives

The objective of this course is for you to learn the basics of Tetra Pak printing, create your own printed images with "plates" made from recycled packaging, explore different approaches and feel inspired to continue with graphic art.

Content

You will develop your own drawings into printable motifs, transfer them to cardboard plates (for example milk cartons) and carve them to create unique prints. You will learn to inking and printing on different types of paper, and produce finished prints on high-quality paper. There is time to explore different ways to vary lines, surfaces and techniques – building both technical skills and your own visual language.

Teaching method

Theory and practical reviews are alternated with supervision during ongoing work. The course is held in a small group (6-8 participants), with ample opportunity for personal supervision.

Materials

Bring your own pen, drawing pad and any image templates/sketches. Other basic materials for the basic elements are included. If needed, there is the possibility to purchase additional materials on site (paid with Swish).

Other

  • This course is held at the Folkuniversitet's premises at Liberagatan 42 on Lindholmen, where the KV Konstskola and the Ballet Academy (Balletakademin) are also located.
  • Old clothing is recommended, as the printing ink may cause stains.
  • The lunch break is 45 minutes. A participant kitchenette with a microwave is available for those who bring food.
  • This course is also available in Swedish. Look for Mjölkkartongtryck.

Kursledare

Beverley Hayes

In English:

"I love graphics for its tactile process and the feeling of discovering something new every time. The balance between control and chance makes each print both well-crafted and unique. In my courses you get to explore and become familiar with different printing techniques, sometimes with recycled materials as a simple and cost-effective way to create graphics, for both beginners and more experienced practitioners."

Beverley Hayes is a graphic artist, based in Gothenburg, working primarily with photoetching and recycled carton prints. She has an art education from the University of the West of England and extensive experience in gallery work and teaching graphics, both in England and Gothenburg. In addition to her work as a freelance artist, where she exhibits both nationally and internationally, Beverley is a teacher and responsible for copper graphics at KKV GBG – a workshop for professional artists, designers and craftsmen.

At Folkuniversitetet, Beverley teaches courses in Basic Printmaking  and Tetra Pak Printing.
