In this course you will learn the basics of throwing off the hump, a technique where you work with a larger amount of clay on the wheel and create multiple pieces from the same piece of clay. This is done in eastern countries, mainly when making several of the same thing. During the workshop you will practice making small cups and plates, or other shapes that are of hand-held size. By trying this technique, you will get a handle on working with more “lively” and unique pieces, a different kind of rhythm than throwing one piece at a time.
Course structure
The group consists of a maximum of 6 participants. Joint briefings are alternated with individual supervision.
You may save three pieces for either flat firing or high firing. Glazing is not included in this course. The course duration includes 30 minutes of lunch/day.
Previous knowledge
A course for those who already know the basics of turning and are confident in centering. You should have taken two courses or equivalent and be able to center.
Atelier
Our atelier is at Kopparbergsgatan 2 in Malmö, easy to reach on bike or by bus.
Material
Cost of material is not included. The cost of clay is 75 kr/kg, firing included*.

Marina Kawata
My name is Marina. I have studied Ceramics in Sweden and Japan, and worked several years with both functional ware and sculpture.
Having lived in many countries, I am fascinated with different techniques that arise from specific cultural contexts. For me, clay is a material that can be forgiving, sensitive, boundless, and therefore provides a serene concentration that welcomes all types of people.
When it comes to making in clay, I have experience in hand building, carving, mold-making, and throwing. Personally, I like to tune into the sometimes overlooked or minute details which can add a lot of value to a simple form.
I am a firm believer of “learning by doing.” I hope to provide the appropriate guidance that could enrich your experience in ceramic craft and art!
