Who is this course for?
Advance your English is a high level general English course for students who already have a general knowledge and understanding of English at C1 level but would like to further improve and refine their language skills
Aims
The aims of the Advance your English course are to:
- Extend your range of vocabulary to help you express yourself clearly in an appropriate style on a wide range of general, academic, professional or leisure topics without having to restrict what you say.
- Help you develop your fluency so you can express yourself spontaneously and at length, almost effortlessly on these topics.
- Help you interact with other speakers with ease, and to be able to relate your own contribution skilfully to those of other speakers.
- Work towards more grammatical accuracy and complexity of usage.
- Help you gain a greater understanding of extended speech, nuances and lines of argument in all forms of speech and written texts and to understand and use a range of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms.
- Improve your writing skills to work towards clear, smoothly-flowing and complex texts expressing points of view at some length.
Content and working methods
Classes will cover a variety of interesting themes and topics relevant to the needs and interests of the group. The group together with the teacher will decide on these together early on in the course. Typical topics are arts and issues in the media, plus other topics related to daily life. We will also look at vocabulary areas such as phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions and other colloquialisms.
Each lesson the class will explore new items of vocabulary, and practise essential communication skills for taking part in discussions based on these areas. We will also discuss areas of more general interest and current affairs. You will be encouraged to make the most of other sources available to practise and improve your English between lessons and after the course has finished.
The teacher will give you information about the course material at the first lesson.
